The landscaping industry is a short sighted one. In fact "landscraping" is a much better word for what happens to almost every yard. Over time the soil is being mined of all it's nutrients, as all trimmings, weeds and leaves, leave the scene via the back of a truck or the green waste bin. To make the garden look nice, homeowners or landscaping companies have to then import fertilizers and mulch. The whole process is convoluted and inefficient.

Most landscapers are probably not even aware of these facts, and even if they are, they have little incentive to do things differently.  Quite the opposite, for the average mow, blow and go operation, relies on this cycle of scrape and scape. In addition, noxious and pernicious weeds are only addressed above ground every other week, meanwhile crowns and rhizomes are allowed to grow stronger season by season, further justifying costly maintenance schedules.

Once a garden is installed we like to let the worms do the work and work to keep them happy, because they'll keep the plants healthy.
